Loading Diablo 2 Without CD: A Frustrating Experience

As a long-time fan of the Diablo series, I was excited to revisit the classic game Diablo 2 during a recent LAN party with friends. Unfortunately, things took an unexpected turn when I discovered that my copy would not load without the original CD. Despite trying various workarounds, including modifying file caps and attempting the official no-cd patch, I encountered a persistent error message asking me to insert the CD.

The issue began when I tried to launch Diablo 2 on my computer without the physical disc. To troubleshoot, I experimented with changing the file caps, hoping that this would resolve the problem. However, it was disconcerting to find that even though others at the LAN party had performed the same action on their Windows machines, they were still able to play without issue.

When attempting to load Diablo 2 again, I received a small window with the message 'Please insert the CD.' Despite having inserted the disc, the game refused to launch. This was where Wine Eject -a came in handy, allowing me to safely eject the CD before trying once more to start the game.

Frustrated by my failure to get Diablo 2 running without a CD, I turned my attention to the official no-cd patch. As many gamers know, this patch requires copying D2xMusic.mpq from the original CD and dropping it into the Diablo 2 directory. However, even with this patch installed on my fully patched (1.12b) version of Diablo 2, which was directly installed from the CD, I still could not get the game to run without a physical copy.
